Education System
The Canadian education system has both public and private schools. The standards across the country are high. The system spans across Universities, Colleges, Career Colleges and Community College.
Higher National Diploma (HND) is for a 2-year course in a vocational subject like scientific and technical business subjects and is awarded by Vocational and Technical Educational Councils.
University: that are funded by the government and are widely recognised worldwide. An Undergraduate course is of 4 years duration and a Masters course is of 2 years duration.
University Colleges: offer degrees, diplomas and certificate courses. The distinguishing features of the University colleges are strong student support services, small classrooms and strong campus environment.
Community Colleges: offer diplomas, certificates and applied degrees. They have small classrooms and better student-professor relationships.
Career College: also called technical colleges. These Colleges offer courses related to Business, Computers and Administrative skills.
Admission Procedure:
- Choose the colleges and universities you are interested in studying in.
- Contact the institutions to gain access to their application forms and other information regarding the application such as fees or insurance.
- Take any required assessments such as TOEFL/IELTS or SAT/GRE.
- Submit application at least 3 months before the due date.
Scholarships
Canadian institutions do not typically offer scholarships for international students but some institutions do offer entrance scholarships. In order to obtain your student visa, you must prove you are financially supported before you can begin your education. Applicants should research the various opportunities that might be available for them.
Government of Canada International Scholarships Program
Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada is responsible for the Government of Canada’s participation in major international scholarship programs. This government website enables users to search for awards available to foreign students for study and research in Canada.
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is worth $50,000 per year for three years. Open to both Canadian and international PhD students.
Quebec merit scholarship for foreign students
Administered by the Funds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies, this government program offers scholarships for doctoral studies, a postdoctoral fellowship and short-term research or professional development.
Trudeau Foundation Doctoral scholarships
Each year, the Trudeau Foundation rewards up to 15 outstanding doctoral candidates who are enrolled or about to be enrolled in a social sciences and humanities program. The annual value is up to $60,000 per scholar for up to four years.
International Council for Canadian Studies
Dedicated to the promotion and support of research, education and publication in all fields of Canadian studies around the world, this not-for-profit organization offers a series of scholarships and awards in support of Canadian studies.

Post Education Opportunities
The PGWPP allows students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. Skilled Canadian work experience gained through the PGWPP helps graduates qualify for permanent residence in Canada through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
A work permit under the PGWPP may be issued for the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years.
